Main objective of curettage is cleaning of perio pockets from dental tartar and particles of hard and soft tissues that promote bacteria development.
There are two main curettage types: closed and open.
Small depth of gum pockets does not require preliminary gum cutting. In such case a closed curettage is being used.
Open curettage is used when deep gum pockets need to be cleaned up and bone tissue must be leveled. Essential part of open curettage is patchwork operation.
In some case dentists utilize vacuum-curettage with blood and tissue suction.
